SECOND EUPHONIUM
Grimethorpe Colliery Band - PHILIPPE SCHWARTZ - SECOND EUPHONIUM

Born in Luxembourg in 1985, Philippe began playing the Euphonium aged 8 at the Conservatoire of the City of Luxembourg. In 2004 he decided to further his musical studies at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester where he was taught by euphonium-pioneer Steven Mead. Philippe graduated from the RNCM with both a Bachelor's and a Master’s degree in music performance as well as the ‘Harry Mortimer Memorial Trust’ Brass Student of the Year Award.

While at the RNCM, Philippe became a finalist in the 2007 and 2009 Concerto Auditions and secured a place at the prestigious RNCM Gold Medal Weekend in 2008. In 2007 he got through to the Semi-Final stage of the European Brass Band Championships Solo Competition held in Birmingham. Since moving to the United Kingdom, Philippe has had a busy performance schedule as a soloist and band player. He has performed solo recitals in Luxembourg, Norway, Germany and England and has appeared as guest soloist with the Luxembourg Conservatoire Wind Orchestra, the Luxembourg Military Band, the RNCM Brass Band and Wind Orchestra, the Folkwang University Brass Band and the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra, to name but a few. After leaving Grimethorpe Colliery Band for a 2 year spell as Principal Euphonium of the Leyland Band, Philippe returned to Grimethorpe in May 2011.

Philippe currently works as a freelance Euphonium soloist and low brass tutor at various private schools in the North-West of England. Philippe is also a visiting euphonium tutor at the Folkwang Musikhochschule in Germany.

Philippe is an artist and clinican for Besson/Buffet Crampon and performs exclusively on the Besson Prestige 2052 Euphonium.
