Michael
began playing at the age of 11 and is another product of the Grimethorpe
Junior Band. He has also played with Carlton Main Frickley, Thoresby
Colliery and Brighouse and Rastrick bands. He is much in demand as a
peripatetic brass and piano teacher, and holds a BA in music and an
L.R.S.M. in Band Mastership. Michael won the Nationals in 1997 with
Brighouse before moving to Grimethorpe.
His banding highlights are performing at the Royal Albert Hall, Sydney Opera House and one day looks forward to performing at Carnegie Hall. He also thoroughly enjoyed his debut in "acting" when he performed as Stan Laurel (with Shaun Hudson as Oliver Hardy) at the 2001 Spennymoor Brass In Concert, where he won best Euphonium of the day. He says he likes the test pieces of Phillip Sparke but his favourite test piece is Paganini Variations by Phillip Wilby. Outside of banding Michael is a very keen Squash Player. Michael plays a Yamaha Maestro Euphonium and is quite unique in banding as he uses a JK clear/plexiglass mouthpiece.
