GRIMETHORPE COLLIERY BAND PLAY THEIR PART IN YORKSHIRE'S GRAND DEPART.

Grimethorpe Colliery Band have provided some of the accompaniments for the official song for Yorkshire's Grand Depart, the start of the Tour De France.

The work was commissioned by Welcome to Yorkshire, the song, a typically stirring anthem entitled 'THE ROAD' will be an all Yorkshire affair with Alistair Griffin (singer and composer) teaming up with Kimberley Walsh (formerly of Girls Aloud) plus string players from Leeds College of Music and stars of the film 'Brassed Off' The Grimethorpe Colliery Band.

Alistair, from York, has a track record of writing for major sporting events. His track 'Just Drive' is the title music for Sky Sports Formula 1 coverage and the BBC chose his song 'What If' to soundtrack Andrew Murray's historic Wimbledon win viewed by over 6 million people.

Bob Childs, speaking on behalf of the band said, 'I was proud to attend the recording session in Leeds and hear first hand what a talent Alistair Griffin is'. Gary Verity, Chief Executive of 'Welcome to Yorkshire' said, 'All the performers on the recording are from Yorkshire which reinforces the fact that Yorkshire is united in promoting the county and welcoming the Tour. What better way to do this than through an official song and we encourage everyone to get a copy of this unique piece of memorabilia'

'The Road' will be officially released in the lead up to the Grand Depart which takes place in Leeds 5th July.

Grimethorpe Band Latest News

South Yorkshire based Dransfield Properties Ltd has been announced as the new main sponsor of the world famous Grimethorpe Colliery Brass Band.

The company has agreed to sponsor the band for the next five years, helping to secure its position as one of the country’s most famous brass bands.

The new sponsorship agreement was announced at a concert held in Barnsley on Monday April 14th in aid of the Mayor of Barnsley’s Charity.

Grimethorpe Colliery Brass Band was founded in 1917 and has gone on to receive national and international acclaim, most notably through its involvement with the film Brassed Off – where the Grimethorpe musicians provided the soundtrack as well as appearing as extras in the film.

The band has four times been named as Great Britain National Champions and 11 times as Yorkshire Champions - but despite its outstanding musical achievements its financial future has been less certain in recent years.

Managing Director of Dransfield Properties, Mark Dransfield, said: “We are delighted and extremely proud to be supporting the Grimethorpe Colliery Brass Band.

“We are a local company and great admirers of the band, not just for their excellent achievements as fine musicians but also for the work they do in their own community in inspiring young people to get involved with music.

“We are pleased therefore to be able to play our part in supporting that work and look forward to a long association with the band.”

Band Chairman Peter Haigh said: “We are highly delighted to have Dransfield Properties sponsoring the band. It is not easy in today’s climate to get financial backing and this support certainly goes a good way to securing the band’s future.”

The band is keen to hear from other companies who are interested in supporting the band both in ensuring it can continue with its world class performances and its community work with local schools.  To find out more about supporting Grimethorpe Colliery Brass Band visit www.grimethorpeband.com/sponsorship.
