JIM FLETCHER - FIRST HORN
As a member of the horn section since 2000, Jim has travelled the world with the band, including tours to Australia, New Zealand, America, Japan and Hong Kong, playing in venues such as the Sydney Opera House and New York's Carnegie Hall, and events such as the proms and proms in the park. He has appeared with the band on Tv with Lesley Garrett and Paul O'Grady. On the contest stage, Jim helped the band to their double Nationals wins of 2005-2006 and various other contest successes at the Yorkshire Area, Mineworkers and Brass in Concert competitions.
Initially learning to play as an eight year old, Jim first played for the Hathern Band in his native Leicestershire, before moving to Yorkshire to study and joining the Sellers Engineering Band. During almost ten years with the Huddersfield band, Jim moved through the section to Solo Horn, and was instrumental in setting up the Sellers Youth Band.
As well as playing for Grimethorpe, Jim enjoys a varied musical life. He regularly records with the renowned folk singer Kate Rusby, and has played with her at festivals and on tours throughout the UK. Around six years ago, Jim was asked to join the stellar all star brass band, the Brass Band of Battle Creek, based in Michigan, USA. He has toured the US and done dates in the Caribbean with this band, and has got to meet and play with luminaries such as Wycliffe Gordon (Wycliffe Gordon Quartet, Wynton Marsalis), Mark Gould (New York Met./Pink Baby Monster), Jens Lindermann (Canadian Brass), Scott Hartmann (Empire Brass) and Marvin Stamm (Stan Kenton/Frank Sinatra/Herbie Hancock).
Jim is more than adept on a variety of instruments and regularly plays in bands, orchestras and groups of different styles and genres. He is Bass player with the group St. Christopher, who appeared regularly in the Indie charts back in the early 90's, and were signed to the iconic label ‘Sarah'. Jim has played festivals and shows in Sweden, Demnark, America and around Britain with the band, appearing with artists such as Los Campesinos! Ballboy, Jens Lekman, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and the Television Personalities to name but a few.
Jim Graduated from the University of Huddersfield with a MA (Hons) in music and currently works for Wakefield Music Services.
