Today Grimethorpe made the lengthy journey between Canberra and Newcastle, finally spotting some kangaroos, wallabies and even wombats en route.
The day got off to a scenic start but things took a turn for the dramatic when, on crossing a roundabout at Cardiff (New South Wales not South Wales) the locking mechanism on the coach trailer containing the GCB instruments snapped open, sending two of the instruments hurtling into the bush!
The band coach, oblivious to the potential disaster, carried on but thanks to the kindness of the locals, catastrophe was averted. One vehicle pulled the coach over, explaining the situation, while another sped down the motorway to the next junction, to come back down the motorway to retrieve the stray cornet and trombone.
A third vehicle pulled over, immediately assisting in repairing the lock, and within minutes the band were intact again and back on the road, hugely thankful of the help and renowned Aussie geniality. The only damage to the instruments and cases was minor and cosmetic. Luck was on Grimethorpe's side.
Newcastle has always been a place of good fortune for Grimethorpe though, most recently in November where the band secured their record 16th Brass In Concert victory at The Sage, Gateshead, near Newcastle, UK. So to it proved in Newcastle, Australia then where another appreciative and near capacity crowd filled the historic Town Hall.
Parallels between the UK and Australia were further drawn at this performance with Grimethorpe's Welsh MD Dr Robert Childs in his element in New South Wales.
The band once again performed with alacrity to a delighted crowd, with soloists Iain Culross, Kevin Crockford, Will Norman, Shaun Crowther, Chris Gomersall, Michael Dodd & Phillipe Schwartz in particularly good form at Newcastle.
Following the 17:00 early evening concert, it was back to Sydney for Grimethorpe for a night on the town to be followed by a well deserved day off in the city tomorrow, before they then resume their tour on to Melbourne, Frankston, Hobart (Tasmania), Clayton, Adelaide & Perth.
